ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Anna Burgess grew up near London, England where she often spent her spare hand experimenting with sketching and doing other crafts. As a teenager, Anna covered the walls in her bedroom with foxes and murals and loved art classes, which not only gave her a grounding in drawing, painting and sculpture but also exposed her to many of the great artists. She got to regularly visit London, Paris and Amsterdam where she was able to observe Degas’ dancers, Van Gogh’s sunflowers and sculptures by artists such as Barbara Hepworth. Anna was always interested in the thoughts and processes that went into each artist’s creation. Although she would have loved to study art at university, she also wanted to study languages and couldn’t find a degree that combined the two. Promising to continue art as a hobby, she chose languages, studying French and Spanish. Shortly after finishing her degree, she moved to Lima, Peru where she has resided for over a decade. During that time she dabbled with different art projects, but it was the Pandemic that finally gave her the freedom to invest in studying art full time with Milan Art Institute and fulfil her dream of becoming a professional artist.

“I choose to paint those things that bring me joy”

Anna’s paintings are the outworking of choosing to live a joy-filled life. ‘I choose to paint those things that bring me joy,’ Anna says, ‘because I believe that joy will show through my paintings and it is there that I feel a connection with the Creator.’ Anna’s paintings often start with a background of inks, where water meets paint and comes alive on the canvas. It’s an opportunity to say yes to freedom, play and celebrating the moment with the colours and their often unpredictable interactions. The focus of the painting then emerges on top of the ink with layers of acrylics and oils. Anna’s artwork is a celebration of colour, a delight in the natural world and an opportunity to connect to the Creator.

‘My painting process is very spiritual for me - I feel a Divine connection and a delight from God when I paint with joy.’

Anna works from her home studio in Lima, Peru, where she lives with her husband, Mark, her three boys and two dogs. Anna loves to share her insights and inspirations that come to her as she paints, both on social media and in her monthly newsletter. Alongside painting commissions, Anna loves to paint in series. Her latest collection is entitled ‘Blooming in the Desert’.
