Things I am loving about Australia / Las cosas que me encantan de Australia
Having been cocooned in life in Peru for four years, and my only outside influences being Facebook and others coming into Peru, I wasn’t sure how I would react to being ‘back’ in the Western World. Spending three weeks in Australia with my sister as she got married and my family, with my boys who are now so much older has been a beautiful time (we still have a week left!) but the strangest things are the things that I had forgotten that I had forgotten! So this blogpost is not focused so much on the people and the times we've had with them (perhaps I'll write about that in another post) but rather the beautiful things I have seen as we have been out and about.
Habiendo estado en una vida encapullada en Perú por cuatro años, y siendo mis únicas influencias de afuera Facebook y otras personas que vienen al Perú, no me sentía segura de cómo reaccionaría al estar de ‘regreso’ al mundo occidental. Pasando tres semanas en Australia con mi hermana que se casaba, con mi familia y mis hijos que ahora están ya más grandecitos ha sido un maravilloso tiempo (y ¡todavía nos queda una semana!) pero las cosas más extrañas resultaron ser las cosas que ¡había olvidado que había olvidado! Entonces, esta publicación de blog no está enfocado mucho en las personas ni en el tiempo que pasamos con ellos (de pronto escribiré acerca de ello en otra publicación) sino de las cosas hermosas que he visto cuando hemos estado paseando alrededor.
Lima, our home in Peru, is in the middle of the desert. It hardly ever rains and the climate is fairly constant. There is no need to see a weather forecast in Lima. No need to see the newspaper forecast to decide what to wear tomorrow. It varies between hot and sunny and cool and damp, but the months gradually change between the two.
Lima, nuestro hogar en Perú, está en medio del desierto. Casi nunca llueve y el clima es bastante constante. No hay necesidad de ver el pronóstico del clima aquí en Lima ni ir a los periódicos para saber que ropa usar el día de mañana. Varía entre caluroso y soleado y frío y húmedo, pero los meses gradualmente cambian entre los dos.
Here in Australia, one of the things that fascinates me is the sky: there is so much of it! Everytime we are out Kaleb spots another aeroplane, and I am constantly amazed by the clouds: colorful pink-purple sunset clouds and dramatic, thunder-filled clouds. The first few days as I was out, I couldn't take my eyes off the clouds! I had forgotten how much the clouds grow and change and move. How much life and personality they have. How many of them there are! The boys were fascinated by them too and seeing the different shapes and figures they made.
Aquí en Australia, una de las cosas que me fascina es el cielo: ¡Hay demasiado en el! Cada vez que estamos fuera Kaleb localiza uno y otro avión, y yo me siento constantemente asombrada por las nubes: coloridas nubes de puestas de sol color rosa y morado y nubes dramáticas llenas de rayos. Los primeros cortos días que estaba afuera, ¡no podía quitar los ojos de las nubes! Había olvidado cuanto las nubes crecen, cambian y se mueven. Cuanta vida y personalidad tenían. ¡Cuántas de ellas hay! Los chicos quedaron fascinados por ellas también y veían la diferentes formas y figuras que hacían.
We have also experienced a very dramatic thunderstorm. I remember as a child being in the mountains of Spain whilst a storm echoed terribly around the hills and the lightning forked near and far. Here we experienced the first thunder and lightening of a rainstorm just above us - it felt like the sky was being ripped open, and poor Daniel, who had never experienced thunder or lightning before ran like a scared animal up the steps and into the house we were at! Thunderstorms are not part of Lima life - I have been told that they have happened rarely, and that some thought they meant the world was ending! I loved that as the rain pelted it down and the wind blew it into the house, our boys wanted to go outside and get soaked through - what they do when it rains in the jungle, because rain is such a scarcity to them. Oh, and the rainbows! So many rainbows!
También hemos experimentado una tormenta muy dramática. Recuerdo cuando era pequeña estando en las montañas de España, una tormenta produjo un terrible eco por todas las colinas alrededor y relámpagos bifurcaban de lejos y de cerca. Aquí experimentamos el primer rayo y relámpago de una tormenta justo encima de nosotros, se sentía como si el cielo se desgarrara hasta abrirse, y pobre Daniel, que nunca antes había experimentado rayos ni relámpagos, ¡subió corriendo los escalones como animalito asustado a la casa donde nos quedábamos! Las tormentas no son parte natural de la vida en Lima. Me dijeron que habrían pasado muy raramente, y ¡que algunos pensaban que ya era el fin del mundo! Me encantaba cuando la lluvia caía con fuerza y el viento la soplaba a la casa, nuestros niños querían ir afuera y empaparse como lo hacen cuando llueve en la selva ya que la lluvia es muy escaza para ellos. ¡Oh, y el arcoíris! ¡Tantos arcoíris!
I am loving the wildlife here. On the quick walk round the block with the dogs, we see lots of different birds including rainbow lorakeets, yellow-crested cocktails, various spiders and little lizards. Kookaburras cackle in the tree next to the house and a walk up to a nearby lighthouse last week treated us with a close-up inspection of a blue-tonged lizard.
Me encanta la vida silvestre aquí. En un paseo corto con los perros alrededor de la cuadra, vimos diferentes aves incluyendo al lori arcoíris, cacatúa sulfúrea, diversas arañas y lagartijas. Cucaburras cacareando en el árbol de al lado de la casa y la semana pasada, subiendo el camino cerca del faro una iguana de lengua azul nos hizo una inspección muy minuciosa.

I love the cleanliness of the beaches -the clean sand and water (the beach near to our house back home in Lima sports a red ’not-safe for swimming’ flag and often a dead rat or two!) I love that I can let the boys run around without worrying about broken glass or dirty rubbish. I love how the water glistens blue and green in the sunlight here, how the shore is lined with little shells and treasures, how the boys build sandcastles until we say it is time to leave.
Me encanta la limpieza de las playas, el agua y la arena limpia (la playa cerca de nuestra casa en Lima muestra una bandera roja que simboliza ‘no seguro para nadar’ y frecuentemente ¡una o dos ratas muertas! Me encanta poder dejar a los niños correr alrededor sin preocuparme de un vidrio roto o la basura. Me encanta como el agua brilla azul y verde a la luz del sol, como la orilla está bordeada de conchitas y tesoros, como los niños construyen castillos de arena hasta que les digamos es hora de irnos.
I love that the children are totally normal in the parks running around with no shoes on. That the playgrounds are safe and well-thought out and that no one is telling me off for allowing my child to climb the slide on his own.
Me encanta que los niños anden con toda normalidad corriendo sin zapatos en los parques. Que los parques recreacionales sean seguros y cuidadosamente construidos y que nadie me esté llamando la atención por dejar que mi niño suba solo al tobogán.
The love for sport and health fascinates me here. People are along all the beaches walking, running, surfing, paddle-boarding… I’m not sure I understand the cultural running in tiny-tight speedos though!
Me fascina aquí el amor al deporte y la salud. Las personas están siempre caminando, corriendo a lo largo de la playa, surfeando con o sin remo… Pero lo que sí no estoy segura de comprender es el jogging cultural aquí ¡en diminutos y apretados speedos!

I love that there are healthy, creative well-thought out options on the menu. I love that the restaurants are creative and unique and pay attention to small details.
Me gusta que haya opciones sanas, creativas y razonables en el menú. Me gusta que los restaurantes sean creativos y únicos y presten atención a pequeños detalles.
I appreciate the little touches in architecture - a beautifully built wall which isn’t covered in graffiti, a well-thought-through path-walk with sculptures to find in the rocks or fun things painted into the pavements. I love that all the houses are different and the creativity people have.
Aprecio mucho los delicados toques de arquitectura, un muro hermosamente construido que no está cubierto en grafiti, un pasadizo cuidadosamente elaborado con esculturas en las rocas o cosas divertidas pintadas en la acera. Me encanta que todas las casas sean diferentes y la creatividad que todas las personas tienen.

I know that many of these things many Australians take for granted, but knowing we are here for such a short time, I am trying to take it all in and appreciate the beauty I see. I’m sure that I will also see our home, Lima, in a new light too, when we return. And I want to see the positive there too, not just the negative opposites of these things I had forgotten or before taken for granted! I wonder what they will be…
Sé que muchos australianos subestiman muchas de estas cosas, pero sabiendo que estamos aquí por tan corto tiempo, estoy tratando de internalizar todo y apreciar la belleza de lo que vemos.
Estoy segura que también veré mi hogar, Lima, en una nueva luz cuando regresemos. Quiero ver el lado positivo de allí también, no solo las cosas negativas que se oponen a estas cosas que había olvidado o ¡que antes había subestimado! me pregunto cuales serán…
